So...I just got back from seeing Cats! It was great!! I didn't recognize any of the names for this particular cast, but everyone did a great job. The version I saw included the Growltiger sequence (which was really cool since I hadn't seen it before), but did not include the Pekes and the Pollicles sequence. Unfortunately, the camera police came in pretty early, so I was unable to take any good pictures . I will try to share some of my experience though...
Let's see, some highlihgts I noticed....
At the beginning, during the overture (and a couple times during the show later), the Cats wove in and out of the audience. Unfortunately I wasn't on an aisle, but they all wore these light up cat-eye glasses that alternated glowing around the room as they moved. It was pretty cool. I noted that this show did not have a Coricopat or a Tantomile, and that Rumpleteazer, but not Mungojerrie, had a separate chorus and dance number costume. Teazer, in particular, was amazingly cute with the other young queens, particularly during the Tugger number.
My favorite numbers of the night were Skimbleshanks, Growltiger, and Mistoffelees. Their Skimble was so cute and enthusiastic. He started the number asleep on top of the large silk hat from the Bustopher number, and was quite funny when he woke up.
Growltiger was just amazing because the actors playing both Growltiger and Griddlebone had AMAZING voices, and had such great chemistry together. At one point the 'crew' escaped through a hole in the back of the backdrop, supposedly to sleep on Growltiger's command. Munkustrap somehow missed out, because he was left on stage looking like 'Where did everyone go?' Eventually he just laid down and fell asleep in front of the wheel as Growltiger and Griddlebone sang their duet. Oh, and when Griddlebone first appeared, all of the crew members flocked to her in admiration. Quaxo instantly flung himself around her waist, and she gave him a good punch in the nose, knocking him backward. Overall, hilarious!
Mistoffelees for this cast was very energetic, almost hyper. He had great facial expressions, and was soo excited about everything that happened in the Junkyard, lol. His dance solo for his number was a bit different than in the movie, but very good nonetheless. When he worked his 'magic', silver streamers came out over the crowd and lights flashed all around the audience. He had the cutest expression on his face when he brought Old D back from Macavity and jumped into his arms . In fact, he jumped on a lot of people during the show, lol. Guess it helps to be small.
Afterwards, during the 'Journey to the Heaviside Lair' sequence, Misto and Tugger shared a little fist bump of victory. Also, after the beetles dance number and during Tugger's song, Misto staid in part of his beetle costume for a bit. After he proclaims Tugger to be 'a terrible bore', he turns sharply and marches off in a huff....wings and all. They were blue and sparkly, and did nothing to make his exit more dramatic, lol. Oh, and after intermission, when the cats started filtering back onstage, it took the audience a while to calm down. All the cats stayed in character however. At one point Misto perched himself, quite alert, on the edge of the stage and stared at people until they looked at him, and then would motion them to sit down so the cats could continue their show. (Can you tell which Cat I chose to focus on in these group numbers yet?)
The only other thing I noticed off the top of my head was that Misto and Cassandra seemed to have a very affectionate relationship going on throughout the show, from the mating dance scene through the Journey to the Heaviside layer. It was a pairing I had not really considered before, though he did seem somewhat friendly with Victoria as well (the girl playing Vicky was perfect, by the way. She moved so gracefully and with just the right feeling, and of course, boy could she bend!).
Overall, a fantastic experience!! I had soo much fun! I bought myself a t-shirt with my leftover birthday money. It has the cat eyes on the back and on the front it has Misto putting 'Cats' up in sparkles in the sky. If I think of anything else fun, I'll be happy to share. That's all for now .
